Do you need a permit for a metal building or carport in Lafayette?

Usually yes. Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) lists carports, sheds and RV covers among the structures that need a residential permit, and it asks for engineered plans for metal buildings.

Residential projects

LCG's Building Codes page says a residential permit is required for a single-family dwelling, a duplex, "or almost any structure associated with a home, such as: a carport, shed, gazebo, RV cover, or a fence that is over 7 feet high."

Exempt: a detached playhouse or shed no larger than 200 sq ft on a movable foundation (piers or skids). It must still meet setback rules from the Development Division.

Metal buildings need engineered plans

LCG says a metal building (with steel columns, beams, girts and purlins), a pre-engineered building or a pole barn needs "a permit, floorplan, and an engineered stamped set of plans which includes the wind load certification." A structure built to the prescriptive code does not need a wind load certification.

Commercial projects

LCG says a commercial permit is required for almost every structure other than a single-family dwelling, a duplex or a structure associated with one. Exemptions include fences up to 7 ft, a one-story detached shed of 120 sq ft or less on a movable foundation, and retaining walls up to 4 ft. Drainage and traffic reviews can also apply.

Codes and loads

LCG lists the state-adopted codes as the 2021 International Residential Code and 2021 International Building Code (with state exclusions and amendments). It lists wind loads per ASCE 7-16 wind charts.

Who to ask

LCG lists the Permit Manager at (337) 291-8491 and the Chief Building Inspector at (337) 291-8485. If you're outside Lafayette Parish, check with your own parish or city. Also check flood zone rules.
